My Complete PDP

I'm pleased with the final choices I have included in my PDP. They are all easily achievable, it is just down to me to professional enough to go out there and achieve them. This brief has been good for me in showing me where my weaknesses lie, or so I feel.

Developing My Homeless Project

This is something that is one of my higher priorities, it is something that I feel could lead me on to bigger things in my career, whether it be my work getting published or exhibited, I feel very strongly about this work.

There is nothing stopping me in the development of this work, it's just down to me to get out there and make it work. The work I have done so far is based in Manchester but I would love to take this further afield, heading to places such as London, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and who knows, maybe even abroad?!

Creating a Printed Portfolio

A portfolio is something that is essential to any artist, having one printed is something that I would much prefer to have over a digital one, although digital is much more accessible, a printed portfolio is much better for giving the viewer a more detailed viewing experience, they can get to grips with your images, hold them up and view them differently, all these things are restricted with a digital portfolio.

Now, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I don't feel as though I have a strong enough body of work to create a complete portfolio, and this is something that would be holding me back majorly, although a portfolio is never complete, I would need to add a few more stronger images to my collection before I stepped into a printers business.

Building My Equipment List

As a professional photographer, this goes without saying! Now, I don't want to have to have the best of everything there is, that's not what my intentions are, it's me that's creating the work, not my equipment.

I would just like to have a suitable 'collection' of equipment where I know that I would never struggle to cover any work that may come my way, it wouldn't be very professional of me to turn down work due to not having the right piece of equipment for me to do the job at hand.

Having used the Nikon D90 for the duration of my university course, this is a strong contender for my camera 'upgrade', although I will be comparing what it's competitors are, within the Nikon family of course!
From there I will most definitely be purchasing a speed light, something which I should already have in my arsenal! Then it will just be a slow process of collecting lenses.

Website Development and Launch

One thing that all professionals have is their own website, a place to showcase their work to the billions of internet users, so why am I lacking in this?

I think the money side of things is the main factor in why I don't have a live website, although this is no excuse with the money that has been invested in me during my time at university. It is definitely something that needs putting right, and sooner rather than later.

My website has a base, it just needs a few things reworking and then making live. Having developed our sites for a brief in our second year, it has since been sat in a file on my computer, hidden away from the whole world, why? This isn't going to help me or my career...

Getting My Work Published

Aswell as entering all the competitions I can, one of the points I would like to address is getting my work published in magazines, papers, online etc.

I know to do this, I will definitely need to work harder on producing more complete bodies of work, something that needs to be addressed pronto. I feel that I don't have enough work to even build a complete portfolio (something I'll come to later), which isn't good for a third year university student who's about to be dumped in the big wide world of this business!

I know what avenues I want to head down in my career, what work I'd like to cover, but for now it's upto me to start creating work that I can use to propel me into these routes. I think I need to take a step back to decide where I would like to see my work published, and then make it happen, contacting the right people at the right companies with the right work!

The three different aspects of photography I would like to attack would be:

  • Documentary:

  • Street Photography:

  • Conceptual/Portraiture:

All these examples of work all have obvious different places that they would sit, it's now down to me to start putting them in their places and making a name for myself.

Photography Competitions

As up and coming photographers, entering competitions is something that is vital to us in terms of getting recognition, something that has been highly encouraged to us by our tutors from the word go. Hearing of the success that some of my peers and former students have had, it shows that these things aren't to be taken lightly and could open up a world of possibilities to us.

With there being so many different places to enter, the possible prizes are endless, from cash to equipment to star studded award ceremonies, why wouldn't we be putting ourselves out there, what's the worst that could happen?

Guest Speaker: Paul Herrmann

Having Paul Herrmann come in was a bit of an eye opener when he got down to discussing certain aspects of the industry, more so the costs and pricing of photography jobs. It was very useful to me to hear Paul's talk, guiding us about exhibitions and photography festivals, down to the personal finances of photography jobs, breaking things down for us to get a proper grasp of how we should set out our charges when pitching for jobs in the future.

He was very encouraging to us to get ourselves out there and do as much as possible, anything beneficial obviously. It was good to have an outsiders view of the industry, and he's quite an 'outsider'!

Building a Personal Development Plan (PDP)

This brief entails us setting out where we feel we are in our careers at the present moment, and where we would like to develop them in the future, near and far, looking at things such as technical abilities, lack of knowledge in certain areas and even personal views on how I feel I am developing and what I can do to rectify these feelings.

When I first received this brief I wasn't so sure about what I would be filling the blanks with, but after a think over things, turns out there's a few things I need to set straight!
